Ambassador Arthur Koll joined the Jewish community of Serbia to celebrate the first night of Hanukkah, an eight-day holiday known also as the Festival of Lights. The Ambassador was invited by the Chief Rabbi of Serbia, Isak Asiel, to light the first Hanukkah candle in Belgrade's synagogue "Sukkat Shalom".

Hanukkah starts on the 25th day of the Jewish calendar month of Kislev - this year on December 21. The holiday celebrates the victory of the Jewish rebels (Maccabees) against the Hellenic Seleucid Empire in 165 BCE and the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem.

Hanukkah celebrates both the physical victory of the small Jewish nation, led by Judah Maccabee, against the mighty empire and the spiritual victory of the Jewish faith against the Hellenism. Its sanctity derives from this spiritual aspect of the victory, and the miracle of the flask of oil, when a portion of sacramental oil meant to keep the Temple candelabrum lit for one day lasted for eight days, the time it took for the Temple in Jerusalem to be rededicated.

The festival is observed by the kindling of the lights of a special candelabrum, the Menorah or Hanukiah, one light on each night of the holiday.

Hanukkah, from the Hebrew word for "dedication" or "consecration", represents a joyful family festival. Gifts are exchanged, parties are given, children play games, and latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (doughnuts) are served. These are delicacies made with oil, long associated with Hanukkah.

The Deputy Head of Mission of the Embassy of Israel in Belgrade, Mr. Yair Frommer, laid a wreath in memory of the victims of the Holocaust during the official ceremony at the Holocaust Memorial in Ledine near Belgrade. Around 250 Jews, including kids, women and old people, were brutally killed in Ledine by the Nazis in 1941 during the Second World War.

The commemoration ceremony was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and members of the Jewish Community of Serbia. The restoration of the Holocaus Memorial in Ledine was partly funded by the International Task Force for Cooperation on Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research (ITF).

The International Task Force consists of representatives of government, as well as governmental and non-governmental organizations. Its purpose is to place political and social leaders’ support behind the need for Holocaust education, remembrance, and research both nationally and internationally.

The ITF was initiated by Swedish Prime Minister Göran Persson in 1998 and currently has twenty-five member countries. Serbia has an observer status in the organization and is in the process of becoming a full member.

“It is with great honor that I fulfill today my duty in presenting the Medals to the Righteous among the Nations, to those people who risked their own lives to save Jews during the Second World War,” said H.E. Mr. Arthur Koll, Israeli Ambassador to Serbia, during the ceremony at the Embassy of Israel in Belgrade.

Ambassador Koll presented the Medals to the children and grandchildren of the Righteous Borivoje Bondžić, Grozdana Bondžić, Ljubica Mandušić-Gazikalović and Jelica Ranković. “Their acts of enormous bravery and selflessness will remain forever engraved in our memories,” emphasized Ambassador.

“Regretfully in present days, the phenomena of hatred, racism, xenophobia and anti-Semitism did not disappear as if history taught us nothing,” said Mr. Koll adding that “the Righteous’ heroic deeds should serve as a “lighthouse that would show us a way into a brighter future.”

The Bondžić family took an enormous risk while hiding Dr. Julija Dajč at their house in the village near Aleksandrovac between 1942 and 1943. Julia was pregnant and there was fear that she might deliver without proper conditions. Despite the fact that there was a death penalty for hiding Jews, the Bondžić family decided to hide her, thus risking their own lives. Thanks to courage of Borivoje and Grozdana, the lives of Julija and her son Ilan Doron were saved from certain death. Mr. Ilan today lives in Haifa and he is a father of three children.

Ljubica Mandušić-Gazikalović was a widow and lived alone with two kids in Prizren. She decided to fight for the lives of Mr. Josef Levi and his family, who left Belgrade running away from the Nazis. Ljubica and her 18 years old daughter Jelica made a special lurking-place in the garden where they hid the Levi’s from November 1941 until March 1943. In the constant fear of death they all lived as one family. Ljubica risked not just her life, but also the life of her children, in order to saved Mr. Levi and his family from Nazi persecution.

Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Martyrs' and Heroes' Remembrance Authority, was established in 1953 to preserve the memory and story of each of the six million Jews murdered by the Nazi regime and its collaborators but also to recognize and honor the few who risked their own lives to save Jews from certain death. Those people are the Righteous among the Nations.

A person who is recognized as Righteous among the Nations is awarded a medal bearing their name, a certificate of honor, and the privilege of having their name added to those on the Wall of Honor in the Garden of the Righteous at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem. This is the highest honor bestowed by the Jewish people, through the state of Israel, on non Jews.

Israeli businessmen believe in the attractiveness of the Serbian market - emphasized Mr. Pinhas Avivi, Deputy Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Israel for Central Europe and Eurasia, who is on an official visit to Belgrade. In a meeting with Serbian Minister of Trade and Services, Mr. Slobodan Milosavljevic, Avivi said that despite the uncertainty caused by the global economic crisis, the Israeli investors in Serbia hope to continue with their projects as planned.

Mr. Avivi stressed that he would like to see more joint venture projects by Israelis in Serbia. “A joint venture is a guarantee for a sustainable, long-lasting economic cooperation between two countries” he explained. Mr. Avivi also suggested holding a seminar in Israel for leading Serbian business people and vice versa, in order to “expand the business connections between the two countries and improve the understanding of the existing potential in the economic field.”

Minister Milosavljevic, who welcomed the Israeli official, expressed his appreciation to Israeli business community in Serbia, especially the high level of direct Israeli investments. “We have more space for business people from Israel,” he said. The Minister also emphasized the Government’s efforts to make bureaucracy friendlier for business people in Serbia.

As part of his official visit, Avivi took part at the Israeli business forum meeting on Monday at the premises of the Airport city in Belgrade. The discussion was opened by Ambassador of Israel to Serbia, His Excellency Arthur Koll, who introduced the representatives of numerous Israeli companies that are active in Serbia – namely Airport City Belgrade, Plaza Centers Serbia, Strauss Adriatic, Home Center, Engel Group, Avital Group, Teri Engineering and CEE.

Mr. Avivi stressed that “economic activity is a major force in developing relations between the countries, much more than politics”, while Mr. Koll emphasized that his Embassy is open to help Israeli businesses in overcoming bureaucratic difficulties.

Avivi also met yesterday with senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with whom he discussed the political and economic relations between the two countries.

Ambassador of Israel to Serbia, His Excellency Arthur Koll, opened the 10th “Days of Israeli Films“ annual event organized by the Embassy of Israel and the Yugoslav Cinematheque in Belgrade.

The Ambassador thanked the audience for their attendance at the celebration of a small jubilee of the festival, which presents some of the most prominent works of the contemporary Israeli cinematography. “For us it is an important indicator that the Israeli movie has found its zealous viewers amongst a very demanding Belgrade audience,” emphasized Mr. Koll.

“Politics, history and myths very difficulty can usurp the areas of film art,” explained

Dinko Tucakovic, the director of the Yugoslav Film Archives. ”That’s why the strength of the new Israeli film is based in a global recognition, not necessarily in the biggest awards or Oscar nominations,” he added.

This year’s premier event of the festival featured the film “Beaufort” directed by Joseph Cedar, winner of the Silver Bear for Best Director at the 2007 Berlin International Film Festival. “Beaufort” deals with one of the very painful national issues. It is based on a true story and chronicles the final days of an Israeli army unit’s tense, painful withdrawal from Lebanon in 2000.

Besides the opening movie “Beaufort” the Days of Israeli film 2008 presents a special selection of works by Amos Gitai, who is one of the most important Israeli film directors today and “the secret code of the program” as Mr. Tucakovic explained. The Belgrade audience will have an opportunity to see his movies Free Zone, Kedma, Kippur and Day After Day, namely stories about issues like the existential experience of war but also about every day life.

During seven days audience will also have a pleasure to enjoy in movies Out of Sight and Someone to Run With. The festival is taking place from 5th until 11th November in the Museum of the Yugoslav Cinematheque in Belgrade.

Ambassador Koll: Cooperation needed on Alternative Energy
16th October, 2008

The instability in world economy and the energy market will hopefully teach us all to cooperate internationally and to develop affordable alternative energy, said H.E. Arthur Koll, the Ambassador of Israel to Serbia. Koll spoke during the second day of the seminar “Energy Management & Control and Renewable Energy Sources” in Belgrade, organized by the Energy Efficiency Agency and the Serbian Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with Galilee College from Israel.

Ambassador Koll emphasized that during the first energy crisis in 1974 oil suppliers created an artificial crisis in order to increase the prices. On the other hand, this year’s crisis is not defined by shortage in supply but by rocketing prices. “The first crisis should have served as a warning in order to invest in R&D and to create reliable alternatives of renewable energy sources that haven’t been utilized to its utmost”, stressed Mr. Koll. He emphasized the importance of creating a partnership between government, private companies and the academic community. “We are given a second chance and we shouldn’t miss it” added Koll.

The participants of the seminar will have opportunity to learn about technical aspects, economic evaluation, environmental aspects, future trends and recommendation for implementation in Serbia. Lecturers are well known Israeli experts with international experience in this kind of trainings, solar and solid waste energy and other renewable and alternative energy sources.

The seminar consists of two modules while lectures are held 15-17 October and 10-12 November 2008 in the Serbian Chamber of Commerce in Belgrade.
